Magnolia Square Market Review

While in town for lunch at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe, Jennifer and I knew we had to stop by their sister shop Hollerbach’s Magnolia Square Market when our waitress mentioned their supply of gluten-free goods. Located literally right around the corner, Magnolia Square Market stocks imported German products, specialty items, deli specialties and a range of freshly baked goods. Upon first entering, the small market can be hard to navigate thanks to the densely packed shelves and labels in foreign languages. However, one you know where to look and what to avoid, the shopping gets easier. For those wanting to recreate the dishes made next door or wanting to source authentic German products, it’s clear why the Market attracts visitors from near and far.

In regards to their gluten-free products, the first place to start looking is their designated gluten-free selection which boasts an impressive assortment of Bob’s Red Mill mixes, pastas, breadcrumbs, and other mixes. While the selection allowed for many choices, I found it a little more pricey than I’ve seen the same items sold at other retail outlets and the brands more mainstream. Admittedly, some products I have not seen before, but that was the exception not the rule.

Branching out from the gluten-free section, I found many naturally gluten-free products nestled among their glutenous counterparts lining the shelves. Mustards, jars of red cabbage (like I had at the cafe), and other products were free from gluten and seemingly safe. Here, reading ingredient labels takes on a whole new meaning as some are solely in German. However, with help and avoidance of clear violators (pastas, gravies, etc.), this too can be a fun foray into German cuisine.

Now to the fun stuff: gluten-free baked goods! Here’s the good news: the baker behind the safe treats served up (muffins, cakes, breads) is experienced with gluten-free baking and observes strict cross-contamination protocols to prevent free-flying flour from ruining the integrity of the finished products. Here’s the bad news: all of the goods have dairy in them. This sad fact rendered the goods off the table for me, but Jennifer was able to purchase a piece of cake to-go (as soon as her review is up, I’ll link it here).

Nearby is the full deli case which offers up sausages, deli meats, and cheeses. While I did not inquire as to the gluten-free status of the offerings, I did note a sign that said that any sandwich could be made gluten-free using the same bread used in the restaurant and that is sold in the bakery. This a great alternative for those wanting a quick grab-and-go meal for lunch or dinner.
