With my food stores depleted leaving me little fresh fruit and veggies, I realized far to late that I would have to sustain myself for the three day period without an emergency grocery run. By Thursday, fierce snow had me snowed in by mid-morning. Knowing that I had to get "real" food to break my five day streak of homemade pizza, I turned to Order Up Towson, the restaurant delivery service I tried out last month. Despite the wintry weather, they thankfully had drivers on duty, and Towson Tavern was open for business and had a dedicated gluten-free menu.
Before placing my order online, I placed a call to Towson Tavern and inquired about which items on the gluten-free menu are also dairy-free (or can me modified to be). The receptionist was really helpful and knowledgeable, but was not hesitant to check with the kitchen when she wasn't 100% sure.
After going through my options on the winter lunch menu, I decided to go for the grilled Atlantic salmon salad with a side of lentil soup. Despite the worsening weather, my meal was delivered in under an hour- pretty darn impressive in my book (kudos to Order Up's awesome service). Unpacking my meal, I was impressed by the effective, efficient packaging that made me feel like I was almost eating at a restaurant with the finely wrapped napkin, silver utensils, and a custom-labeled takeout box.
The salmon salad was, first and foremost, a salad. The majority of the space was taken up by beautiful, fresh lettuce which was topped with red onion and a nicely portioned piece of grilled salmon. Seasoned minimally, yet efficiently, the fish was fresh and had a nice flavor. Topped with a tarragon vinaigrette that pulled all of the flavors together, the salad was simple, yet delicious.
The hearty lentil soup, smokey and seasoned, featured lentils, carrots, and ham. I liked the chunky texture, and flavored broth. Classic in it's ingredients and flavoring, it wasn't the most remarkable lentil soup I've had, but it hit the spot.
While my meal was not completely showstopping, Towson Tavern delivered a solid gluten-free meal when I most needed it. I certainly appreciate that Order Up Towson and Towson Tavern were up and at 'em on such a dismal day, and were able to get me food when I couldn't even leave my dorm. I certainly hope to check out their next seasonal menu.
