Our House Baking Mixes Review: Part 2

This is the second part of a two-part review covering Our House baking mixes. To see part 1, click here.

Back in September at the Natural Products Expo East, Our House baking mixes caught my eye because they were gluten-free, top allergen-free, and vegan. The company generously sent me a sampling of mixes to taste and try, and have been hard at work putting each to the test.

This review covers the chocolate brownie mix, pancake and waffle mix, and all purpose four, the three mixes that are the sweetest of the assortment.

Chocolate Brownie Mix

If I’m going to talk sweets, I might as well start with the sweetest of the three: the chocolate brownie mix. This brownie mix requires a little more effort (creaming butter) and more gourmet ingredients (vanilla extract) than your average brownie mix, but the end result is pure decadence. The brownies have a rich chocolate profile and a texture that has a good blending of cake-like texture and fudginess. I made up a batch to take to my monthly all-staff meeting and the brownies disappeared in mere seconds- no one the wiser that the brownies were missing gluten or dairy.

Pancake and Waffle Mix

When I was packing my bags for Thanksgiving, I threw the box of pancake and waffle mix into my bags so that I could make some holiday cheer for my family. The mix comes together easily, and renders thick, fluffy pancakes. I was impressed how they preserved their shape while cooking, not turning into a paper thin pancake due to thin batter. Slightly sweet, they easily support any mix-in or topping you desire. Due to their thickness, I found that small portioning worked better, as larger pancakes sometimes did not cook all the way in the middle.

All Purpose Flour

As a mix-dependent baker, I love the easy of pulling out a box to make sweet treats. However, I like to mix it up sometimes and bake entirely from scratch. Our House’s all purpose flour is particularly suited for this endeavor, because it can stand in for any gluten-free flour in recipes. To trial this, I used the flour to make blondies (click here for recipe). The flour worked beautifully, and the end result was decadently delicious. I love how easy the flour was to use, and how effortlessly it worked with the recipe. The best part of using the flour? Not having to mix together multiple individual flours to create a custom blend!
