After checking out a few restaurants, I felt comfortable enough to settle for Kasa Restaurant, whose staff assured me that their menu had some gluten-free options to chose from. With a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a nice evening for dining al fresco, I was optimistic about the dining choice.
Just a few blocks away from the Amway Center, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and other downtown attractions, the location couldn't have been better and more accessible.
Because the menu isn't marked for gluten-free dishes, the wait staff took a paper menu with them to the kitchen to consult with the chef to see what would be safe. With a lot of the menu crossed out, there still were good options, and it was nice to see that they were aware that some dishes would require modification.
Complicating the ordering process was my co-occuring dairy restrictions. That narrowed the limited safe options further, but the waitress covering our table was proactive and knowledgable about how to communicate between the kitchen staff and me.
The menu is tapas-style, which means that diners should plan on ordering 2-4 small plates for a meal. Sharing is definitely encouraged too!
I originally wanted to order the shrimp a la plancha, but dairy proved hard to avoid in the coconut curry lime sauce. The waitress offered to have the kitchen prepare the shrimp without the sauce and I agreed because eating shrimp is such a treat for me. The shrimp had a lovely spicy flavor, which was enhanced by a squeeze of lime juice. The four shrimp were large and plump- cooked perfectly and not too dry.
As a side, I ordered the sautéed vegetables, which did not require modification and are naturally vegan. I loved that they were tender and seasoned generously, each vegetable fresh and flavorful. Though simplistic, the vegetables earned two thumbs up from me.
In all honesty will I return to Kasa? Probably not, the options were pretty limited. That being said the shrimp and veggies I ordered were very good. My hesitation is that both portions were pretty small for the price, especially sans sauce in the case of the shrimp. It's good to know they have gluten-free options but I did not leave with any desire to race back for a repeat visit.
