Sonoma Flatbreads Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Pizza Review

The white whale of being gluten-free and dairy-free are safe versions of typical gluten and dairy-laden comfort foods. While a gluten-free option can be found, so often the product contains dairy (or vice-versa).

As a college student, my freezer looks a bit different than others’ in my dorm because mine is missing one of the staples of college life: frozen pizza. For three years now I have survived late night study sessions without frozen pizza to get me through, but at Expo East last year, I discovered a product that would change everything: Sonoma Flatbreads’ gluten and dairy-free Fire-Roasted Vegetable pizza.

Yes, there are other companies that have attempted the gluten and dairy-free frozen pizza, but what I’ve determined are the hardest parts to master is the crust and cheese. No one wants to eat a gooey, oily mess atop a cardboard crust, which I thought was the epitome of gluten and dairy-free frozen pizza. However, with Sonoma Flatbread’s innovative new product, you too will join me as a believer that gluten and dairy-free pizza has finally arrived.

Once your oven as at the perfect temperature, the pizza needs less than 12 minutes to cook to perfection. I left it in a little longer so that the crust would crisp up, but using a pizza stone might achieve the same effect in less time (I just have aluminum baking pans).

You can see a full listing of the pizza’s ingredients below. Several of the ingredients are Rainforest Alliance Certified, which means that they meet sustainability standards for agriculture. Beyond being certified gluten-free and dairy-free, the pizza is also vegan and soy-free.

The 10″ pizza is big enough for 2-4 people to enjoy, depending on their hunger levels. The crust is crunchy and able to support the weight of the toppings. The sauce is bold and a little spicy, which is sets it apart from other pizzas where the sauce is an afterthought. It is flavorful and supports the assortment of vegetables and vegan cheese topping the pizza. The vegetables are baked enough but are not too soggy, and retain their flavor. Now for the make-or-break aspect: the cheese. Through culinary engineering, the texture is perfect and the flavor spot-on, and it’s sprinkled enough to satisfy but not enough to be a cloying, gummy mess.

The result is a pizza that can rival restaurant-made options. It can be underdone in the center of the pie if not baked long enough, but it’s solved by a couple more minutes in the oven. There’s many moving parts that Sonoma Flatbread had to get right- crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings- and effortlessly they navigate them and construct the perfect pizza.

If you cannot tell by now, I absolutely loved Sonoma Flatbreads’ fire roasted veggie pizza. It may seem like a simple thing, but it’s really nice to have the simple luxury of frozen pizza I can make whenever a craving strikes. I cannot wait until their personal-sized pizzas (6.5″) hit store shelves near me because I can totally see stocked freezers full of them for the remainder of my collegiate career and beyond.

I didnt know there was a larger version! I have only had the personal sized pizzas and I can eat 2 at a time! I am gluten free (kind of) dairy free and low protein because I have PKU. And this is the best pizza I havr ever had that meets all those requirements! Thanks for sharing!
