Specialty Pizza Review

There are times when I am game for constructing a pizza masterpiece from scratch, and there are times when I am not. After a long workweek left me exhausted and uninspired, I could think of no better way to spend Tonys Sunday than settling in for the Broadway’s best night with a delivery pizza on hand to maximize the fun and minimize the mess.

Living north of Orlando, most of my favorite pizza places in town are at least a twenty minute drive away. Luckily, in my absence, I discovered that a nearby delivery pizza restaurant had introduced a gluten-free menu. Skeptical at first, I was unsure whether I wanted to give them a go, but was convinced by the rave reviews I saw on a local gluten-free Orlando Facebook page and Find Me Gluten Free. This pizza place, Specialty Pizza, was a family favorite of mine in my previous life as a gluten eater, so I was excited to see if they could serve a safe pie right to my doorstep.

Specialty’s tagline that “natural tastes better” is not just a fluff line but a commitment to their customers. Determined to separate themselves from the chemically-pumped, faux ingredients that other delivery pizza chains use, Specialty Pizza has decided to go the au naturale route by saying no to unnecessary additives such as preservatives, overly refined sugars, too much salt and fat, and other dietary demons.

On the gluten-free front, Specialty Pizza’s gluten-free pizzas come in one size: a 12″ medium crust. Beyond just stocking the crust, they make sure to check several necessary boxes in preparing it right:

  • All pizza toppings are gluten-free, except for meatballs
  • All pizza and wing sauces are gluten-free
  • Rice flour is used to stretch both gluten-free and gluten-filled pizzas to eliminate airborne gluten contamination
  • A separate pizza cutter is used to also minimize cross contamination
The gluten-free pizza crust comes with an upcharge of $3.50. However, any coupon on a medium pizza can be used on a gluten-free pizza (there’s coupons on the website, just mention them over the phone when ordering). In addition to being gluten-free, the crusts are vegan, dairy-free, egg-free, wheat-free, and soy-free. That being said, there is a warning (which is often present in all gluten-serving restaurants) that there is no 100% guarantee that the pizza will be safe. Use your own judgement and comfort level to judge whether Specialty is right for you.

When I ordered, I made sure to specify that I wanted a gluten-free pizza, and asked if the red sauce has cheese in it (it does not). I ordered the super veggie specialty pizza, without olives and cheese. I was quoted a thirty to forty-five minute delivery time, and the pizza came within that window. I was pleased to see the gluten-free label on the pizza, and that the crucial step of leaving off the cheese was not overlooked.

I was impressed by the sheer size of the pizza and the wonderful abundance of toppings it supported. Truly 12″ in diameter, the pizza could easily serve two people. The super veggie pizza comes loaded with onions, broccoli, mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, and artichokes. I really liked how the thin crust was not floppy or flavorless, instead performing adequately to support its many toppings. It was nice and chewy towards the center of the circle and crunchy around the edge. The sauce was nicely seasoned, and featured a nice tomato flavor while the veggies were all fresh.

As pizzas go, it’s not the best I’ve ever tried, but compared to other pizza places I have found, it’s a worthy contender. I cannot argue with getting pizza delivered right to my house, which Specialty earns major points for. I also really like the fact the the pizza is affordable, a rare feat when gluten-free pizzas can run up to $20+. I am pretty sensitive to cross contamination, and did not have any ill effects at all from my pizza, another check in the box for Specialty Pizza.
